What is a Refractory Panel?
Refractory panels are made with heat-resistant materials for added protection against the hottest fires and reducing the chance of a chimney fire. There are typically four refractory panel sheets of brick fitted to the sides and back of the fireplace’s walls.
How do they work?
Refractory panels are designed to reflect the fire’s heat back into the living area, allowing for extra warmth. An additional benefit is your firebox gains added protection from dangerous heat.
When do Refractory Panels need to be replaced?
Anytime there is a crack in your refractory panel, it’s time to replace it. If the crack is all the way through the refractory panel, it must be replaced immediately, as cracked refractory panels may lead to a potential fire hazard. In addition, improper functioning panels will decrease the efficiency of your fire, leading to higher heating bills and the use of more firewood.
